In the case of such channels as UK Gold, Bravo, Granada Plus and TNT Cartoon Network, a lot of the shows have all been made and are simply being repeated. The main function of these generic channels is to provide the platform for a library of material. There are jobs, but they are mainly in the presentation area. Some children's channels make quite a bit out of linking two programmes together - they have phone-in requests and people play small competitions between shows. Often the links for these programmes are all recorded in one day of activity in the studio, each week.
Documentaries and fact-based or educational programming and news programmes all have their place, but not usually in the peak time part of the schedules - although the rule is often broken. Documentaries, including natural history, often use a celebrity to link the programme in order to give a subject popular appeal.
