Hitting bottom happens when deniers’ behaviors and ac­ tions damage their lives to such a drastic extent that they are left with absolutely no choice but to address their LIBs. As long as deniers can still function in their lives without anything earth-shattering happen­ ing, they can stay in denial. There are five types of rock bottom that deniers may experience, depending on their LIB: 1. They may hit a health bottom: The denier is confronted with failing health and left with no choice but to either stop the LIB or die.

By breaking up his LIB, he was able to run through a series of actions that never added up in his brain—so he never saw the total sum of his actions. Here are more examples, using the ADAPT list: • Abuse: A psychologically abusive woman doesn’t single out any one person with her attacks but makes random negative com­ ments to anyone she meets. • Disorders: A man who suffers from body dysmorphia obsesses on random body parts throughout the day, instead of recogniz­ ing that he is obsessed with his entire appearance.

The more pieces you lose, the more tempting it becomes to use other LIBs to fill all the new holes in your puzzle caused by your first LIB. Using LIBs this way eventually becomes an endless cycle that causes you to rely on them even more as time passes. So why on earth would any of us want to ruin our lives doing something negative when we could choose to do something positive instead? The reasons we turn to LIBs can vary. For most people, a LIB fills an emotional need for something they feel they are lacking in their life, such as a stronger sense of selfesteem, comfort, security, happiness, or a calmer state of mind.
