The success of electric traction on the Chicago elevated lines was beyond dispute, and the Sprague system spread widely, with cars carried on Sprague trucks, controlled by multiple-unit apparatus. By 1903, all the New York City elevated lines were electrified, and the ability of electric traction to work all rapid-transit routes was proven (CERA 113, 1973; Condit, 1980; Cundahy, 1979; Middleton, 1974, 1977).
