30 An Introduction to Marine Geology Measurement of the Field The total field of the earth has been measured in surveys at sea in two ways, by means of the flux-gate magnetometer and the nuclear 1 3 6 , 2 5 02 9 3 ' * The flux-gate magnetometer is precession magnetometer/ the saturable core type in which a rod of ferromagnetic material with non-linear magnetization properties acts as the core of one or more windings. The windings are connected to alternating-current circuits. Changes in the magnetic field cause changes in the magnetization of the core and this is measured by the change in flux produced by the alternating-current.

These features are shown in Fig. 14, where the ridge is compared with rift valleys of East Africa, and in Fig. 15. T h e most striking of these features is the central rift valley, Fig. 15. F. in the same coil. The frequency of this signal (but not the amplitude) depends only on the magnitude of the field in which the precession occurs, and is approximately 2000 c/s. It is independent of the orientation of the field so that if the frequency can be measured with sufficient accuracy the field can be determined. In practice, although the field can be measured to 1:50,000 easily, the daily variation and other sources of error determine the precision of a survey. The method has the great advantage that it is absolute, unlike the flux-gate method.
